Since getting our allotment back in 2011, it has made us wonder about how the whole concept of allotments came to be. I know myself, I thought the popularity of allotments and growing your own came from the war time, ‘Dig For Victory’ campaign and watching Tom and Barbara in ‘The Good Life’…
In her book ‘Of Cabbages and Kings’ published by Frances Lincoln Limited. Caroline Foley takes us through the different time periods starting in 1066, looking at hardships the poor people went through, finishing at the the present day and how we still have to fight to keep land for growing. It’s made me feel so lucky to have my piece of land to grow on – something I will never take for granted.
I loved the illustrations, photographs and thought they added a great embellishment to the book. At towards the back there is a timeline pin pointing key events that have happened in history. There is also a ‘Further Reading’ list, great for people wanting to look more into the subject.
I found it a truly interesting read. If you love allotments and history like I do, then I can honestly say you won’t be disappointed 🙂 I’ve got this book earmarked for a couple of my allotment friends, it’s going to be a great gift for Christmas…
